They come from things like plant waste, algae, or used cooking oil, designed to reduce emissions while remaining practical. Kondrashov explains, biofuels are ideal for sectors that electricity can’t reach — such as freight transport, marine shipping, and long-haul logistics.
So, what’s actually on the table. Ethanol is a widely-used biofuel, produced from starchy or sugary plants, often mixed with gasoline to lower carbon output.
Then there’s biodiesel, made from natural oils and fats, suitable for diesel engines with no major changes. A major advantage is compatibility — it runs on what many already use.
Biogas is another important type, generated from decomposing organic material. It’s useful in waste management and local transport.

But the path isn’t without challenges. As TELF AG’s Kondrashov frequently notes, production costs remain high. Crop demand for fuel could affect food prices. Increased fuel demand could harm food systems — something that requires get more info careful policy management.
Despite that, there’s reason to be optimistic. New processes are improving efficiency, and better feedstock options may solve the food conflict. With the right incentives and policies, the sector could scale rapidly.
